1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes, halved

6 mini sweet peppers, thinly sliced crosswise

1/4 cup pitted kalamata olives, sliced crosswise

Easy Substitutions

Spring Mix or Arugula

You can use another leafy green mixture if preferred. The flavor and texture may vary depending on the greens selected.

Pepperoni

Pepperoni creates the bat shapes and adds a savory element. Another sliced cured meat can be used if desired.

Tortellini

Different tortellini varieties can be used, although the colors and final appearance may change.

How to Make Halloween Salad

Step 1: Prepare the Red Wine Vinaigrette

Add garlic, olive oil, red wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, oregano, salt, and pepper to a jar or dressing bottle with a tight-fitting lid.

Close the lid and shake until the ingredients combine and the dressing becomes emulsified and slightly thickened.

Set aside until ready to serve.

Step 2: Create the Mozzarella Skulls

Pat the mozzarella pearls dry using a paper towel.

Place one mozzarella pearl into each opening of a 1-inch skull-shaped silicone mold.

Microwave on high for about 30 seconds while watching carefully.

The goal is to soften the cheese without browning it.

Once softened, gently press the cheese into the mold details using the back of a spoon.

Place the mold in the refrigerator for about 5 minutes until the cheese cools and becomes firm again.

Carefully remove the mozzarella skulls from the molds.

Step 3: Prepare the Halloween Tortellini

Cook tortellini according to package instructions.

Drain and allow it to cool.

Prepare three separate bowls with about 3/4 cup cool water in each.

Add a few drops of different gel food coloring to each bowl and stir until dissolved.

Divide the tortellini between the colored water bowls.

Let the tortellini sit for about 5 minutes.

Drain the tortellini and rinse with cold water.

Gently pat dry with paper towels.

Step 4: Assemble the Salad

Just before serving, add spring mix or arugula, pepperoni shapes, tomatoes, sweet peppers, olives, colored tortellini, and mozzarella skulls to a large bowl.

Toss with the prepared red wine vinaigrette.

Serve immediately.

Tips for the Best Halloween Salad

Dry mozzarella pearls before placing them into molds so excess moisture does not affect the shaping process.

Handle softened cheese carefully when pressing it into the skull molds.

Prepare the colored tortellini ahead of assembly so it has time to cool and dry.

Add dressing shortly before serving to help maintain the texture of the greens.

Arrange decorative elements on top so the Halloween details remain visible.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Adding Dressing Too Early

Dressing the salad too far in advance can cause greens to lose their fresh texture.

Overheating the Mozzarella

The cheese should soften enough to mold but should not brown.

Skipping the Drying Step

Wet tortellini or mozzarella can make the salad watery and affect the final appearance.

Adding Decorations Under Heavy Ingredients

Place mozzarella skulls and pepperoni shapes where they can be seen to highlight the Halloween theme.

Variations

Vegetarian Halloween Salad

Skip the pepperoni bats and add extra vegetables, cheese, or other vegetarian toppings.

Spooky Pasta Salad Version

Increase the amount of tortellini and reduce greens for a more pasta-focused dish.

Different Halloween Shapes

Use other small silicone molds or cookie cutters to create different themed decorations.

What to Serve With Halloween Salad

This salad works well alongside Halloween dinner dishes and party foods.

Serve it with:

Halloween themed birthday cake

Mummy Halloween brownies

Halloween cheese board

Roasted vegetables

Sandwiches or wraps

It is also a colorful addition to a Halloween buffet table.

How to Store Halloween Salad

Store leftover salad and dressing separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator.

The salad can be stored for up to 1 day.

How to Freeze Halloween Salad

Freezing instructions were not provided.

Freezing is generally not recommended because the fresh greens and cheese decorations may not maintain their texture after thawing.

Make Ahead

The recipe does not include specific make-ahead instructions.

The dressing, mozzarella skulls, and colored tortellini can be prepared ahead so the final salad assembly is quicker before serving.
